“You’ve got a visitor…”
A silver-haired shadow hidden in a prison cell shook its head… “At this hour?” “It’s 11AM…” “Really? OK, then…” The cell door was rusty, creaking under the guard’s obviously irritated look… “Old doors, eh? Lots of people staying behind them…” the prisoner said with a flashy smile. “Let’s just leave the comments for later, shall we? …This way…” The walls were whiter than the usual…So worn out… “Hmm… sorry to disturb you once again with my insipid comments, but who screamed last night?” “No one screamed… but I know you moaned in your sleep…” “Oh, did I? Sorry if I bothered you; it must’ve been a bad dream…” “Yeah, tell me about it… Anyway, here we are…” The guard stopped, seeing that the prisoner wouldn’t move from near the door… “Guard, could you please leave us alone?” A young woman stared at the prisoner’s shocked grimace… “Yes, ma’am…remember you’ve got 10 minutes…” The woman touched a chair nearby firmly… “So… your name is Raven, right? I finally got to hear it when the judge pronounced it…” “I don’t want to seem hysterical, but what are you doing here?...” “I guess I have the right to ask you a few things…” He gasped… “S-sure…” “Kind of interesting, huh? Talking to the one who took away everything you used to have…” “I’m really not in the mood to be interrogated right now… I didn’t even get to sleep well, miss… “At least, tell me what made you do such things...” Raven played a bit with his hair… “I don’t think I had a proper reason, actually; I was probably in a trance of some sort…” “I presume you knew Luke…” “Oh, yes, that’s a certain thing… What I’m saying is that I never really hated him… And I don’t think that poison was as painful as everything he went through day by day… I probably wanted to set him free ...Or not…” “What was he going through?...” “Jail mainly made him think about his parents… you know the story with them…” “And how do you know that?” “I can tell…” Alicia kept staring… “You’re saying that his parents are somehow related to being in jail?” “Who knows? Maybe he felt guilty of something…” “So that’s why he came to me that night…because he felt guilty?” “Yeah, that doesn’t seem illogical to me…” The door suddenly opened widely, with the guard sitting in front of it, panting … “I’m sorry to interrupt you but… I was asked to call you… both… in court…Something happened…” “What?” Alicia and Raven asked at the same time, looking at each other bizarrely… “You’ve got to come…from what I heard, it’s mostly bad news…” The accused and the witness rushed out of the room, guided by the astonished guard… finally reaching the hall in which the judge and the prosecutor seemed to be extremely worried… “Guard…tell us… did the prisoner do anything out of the ordinary last night?” “No, not at all, your honour…” “Fine, then… you should know that… Halestone wasn’t found in his bed this morning… We’ve searched everywhere around the hospital, knowing that he couldn’t have gone too far… but… we were wrong… And… the results of the DNA tests doctors made came today… they told us they’ve never seen something similar…” The judge showed Raven and Alicia a piece of paper… their eyes stopped upon the words: Unknown genes detected … “What does this mean?” “We don’t have a clue… that’s why we need to find Halestone, and quick… Doctors fear that if he has run away, he can’t resist too much…” The judge stopped, watching Alicia get paler… “Damn it… they now know…” Raven’s thoughts mixed up with raging fury, as he desperately wanted to find Luke… But he calmed down, telling himself that the night will have to come… ![]() ![]() So would you rather live out a lie than live wondering How the fire feels while burning? |

…
It’s almost outrageous to see how the sun suffers in the dusk… It’s like the moon doesn’t have any mercy when it appears and squeezes the life out of the aching sky… And they all say nature doesn’t contain the smallest bit of cruelty… Or fear… Fear that rises with the sounds of a door handle moving… “Luke?...” The word echoed all around the rusty house… The floor, holding blood traces, trembled under mutual sobs… “God, tell me that nothing happened…” the new-comer whispered, looking at the red stains and walking along the room… …Just to see a broken mirror… Its pieces were put together… but one of them was curiously missing… The man stared at his incomplete and modified image in the mirror… His eyes, painted in oily blue… his silver hair, his light complexion… …White wings and a gleam coming from his face… he stopped gazing as he caught sight of something dark in another room… He ran towards it, his steps tending to be insecure… He bended down to get a closer look, trying not to panic… …A body lying without movement… filled with salty remains of tears and dry essence of life… “No way…” Sweat came down upon the man’s eyebrow… as he tried to put his hands on the shoulders of the one on the floor... being as gentle as possible… His heart bearing despair… his lungs closing in… But just when he was about to touch the body, its hand grabbed on to one of his sleeves… its grip a bit loose… “Raven… please…tell him to stop…” The voice sounded rough coming from the thing that a minute ago seemed dead… “Hmm… can’t you tell him, Luke?” He shook his head firmly, his black hair caressing his ears with misunderstood whispers… “He won’t listen... Make him stop… I’m begging you…” “…What have you done to yourself?” Raven grabbed Luke’s left arm, moved by a macabre thought…He uncovered it, making him moan… …A deep wound that got to the bone stared at him… “…What the hell is this…” “Don’t touch it…don’t…” He gave an almost scream as he felt Raven’s fingers rushing on his torn skin and flesh… “Get up, Luke…” “N-…” “I said get up, NOW!” Black wings hit the wall gruffly… Raven took his jacket off just to make a thorough search in its pockets… A bundle of thick red thread made his eyes shine… “Where did you get that…?” “Doesn’t matter…” He shook his silver-haired head and pulled the wounded arm towards him once again… with the thread at the ready… “Wait...no…” The room filled with Luke’s cries as Raven carelessly carried on covering his arm with the thread… Pain overpowering as he tied the final knot tight enough… “What do you think you’re doing, Luke?...” “I can’t take this…” he replied, tears flowing out of his red eyes… “Is this the way you want to fight back?...’Cause if it is, I regret getting you out of that tomb of yours… You should’ve mouldered in there, like all these pathetic humans that surround you…” “No one surrounds me…can’t you see I’m on my own?...” “You’re not, but it isn’t my fault that you can’t see it!...” Raven was shouting already, frightening with his words… Luke got closer to the wall, although every part of his body hurt like never before… He couldn’t help panting… Raven stopped and looked deeply into his eyes… “You’ve got high temperature…” “What?...” he replied as he felt a warm hand pressing on his forehead. “Let’s get you in bed…” The blue-eyed one dragged Luke with him… ending up by carrying him in his arms… “I can see it clearly now… he’s too weak… and I can guess why…” The bed seemed so far from them… Luke’s skin got colder with each step that made the floor creak, his thoughts uncertain and unclear… “There… cover yourself…it’ll be better this way…” The blanket wasn’t as warm as it used to be in the past… “Ah, I can now tell… You haven’t been drinking a thing since you came here, have you?...You’re dehydrated…” Raven got up and ran back to his jacket...taking a half-full bottle of water from it… Luke slightly bit his tongue at the sight of the bottle… “Come on…drink it all…” “I…can’t…” “At least take a sip, for heaven’s sake…” The sweet touch of water on his lips was a true blessing… …But he stopped drinking, as if he was rejecting the chance to stay alive… “I’ll just leave it here…” Raven said putting the bottle aside and sitting on the edge of the bed, with his protective looks somehow admiring the blurry image of the wounded one… But he suddenly fixed his eyes upon the window, the wind blowing smoothly in a sleepy breeze …the moon staring back at him with disdain … Disdain similar to …envy… “Feeling better?” No answer… He turned around, lying on the bed for a minute, with his stomach barely touching the blanket… he got up, his right hand now resting on Luke’s aching head … He was whispering something so slow and deep…as if he was reciting… “What the hell is he doing?...” …Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven… Luke was revived of what he heard…he let him continue and closed his eyes… …And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen… …Harmony that immediately follows a decisive battle… “Luke?...” Raven smiled at the sight of an angel fallen asleep… “Guess I’m not needed anymore…” …Voices coming from needless ghosts of unwanted quarrels… The door opened with the sound of a cruel star slayer… …And with the exact same sound, it closed, holding inside the same old perfume of time… ![]() ![]() So would you rather live out a lie than live wondering How the fire feels while burning? |
